Auch am Gästehaus in Okakarara werkelt unser „Hausmeister auf Zeit“, Michael Steinbach, fleißig herum. Welche Neuerungen das Gästehaus durch seine Hilfe ergänzen, schreibt er im zweiten Teil seines Berichts:
„Zum „Warmlaufen“ wurde im September am neuen steps-Gästehaus ein Braai gemauert. Das ist eine Art Grilltisch, der mit Holz oder Holzkohle vollgepackt wird. Das „Braaien“ gehört zu den positiven Hinterlassenschaften der ehemaligen südafrikanischen Besatzer und erfreut sich auch in Namibia großer Beliebtheit. Vorzugsweise wird Wild gegrillt, zur Not geht auch Rindfleisch oder Bratwurst. Der Braai ist inzwischen eingeweiht und ergänzt jetzt die Gemeinschaftsküche der fünf Gästezimmer.
Nebenan im Bürogebäude von steps wird derzeit allerhand umgebaut: Das hat der Hausmeisterei unter anderem den „Großauftrag“ beschert, das Vordach zu vergrößern, dessen Daseinszweck, Schatten zu spenden, sich gerade in der momentanen Hitze als Segen erweist. Dadurch heizt sich auch das Gebäude weniger auf. Gesagt, getan. Zwei mit Öl getränkte Pfosten – das Öl hilft gegen Termitenbefall – gibt es noch im Fundus, das Bauholz dagegen reicht nicht mehr und muss zusammen mit den Dachblechen beim örtlichen Baustoffhändler bestellt werden. Praktisch ist, dass es hier bei steps einen kleinen Werkzeugschuppen gibt, in dem meine Vorgänger bereits ein kleines Baumarktsortiment angesammelt haben. Nicht mehr alles ist wirklich zu gebrauchen, aber was man alternativ noch nutzen kann, wenn es das Passende gerade nicht gibt, lernt man hier in Afrika wirklich vorzüglich. Beim Dach werden natürlich keine Abstriche gemacht und da die Wellblechdächer wie auf unserem Office in ganz Okakarara verbreitet sind, hält der Händler auch die passenden Spezialschrauben dafür vor.“
